Did you hear the one about the man who thought his wife had too much leisure time on her hands so he decided to open a restaurant and put her to work, only to find it backfired on him, 'cause now she's busy at the restaurant and he's having to help wash clothes, scrub floors and dust furniture at home?
It's been said curiosity killed the cat! If you've been curious about some things here at the cabin, let us help you out before curiosity kills you!
The logs are 3 different kinds of pine and came from Houston, Missouri, via New England Log Homes. Yes, the cabin was a kit and came with everything but the sub-flooring. The cabin was put up by family and friends and all the work was done by us except for the fireplace which was done by Kenny and Ed Lodge & Company. We heat our building with said fireplace which has a wood-aire insert.
We employ around 34 people and when we first opened up, only 1 waitress had ever worked in a restaurant before. Talk about Greenhorns!!
Every 2 1/2 feet in each round of logs is a 10 inch spike - you can see one hangin' right above our cash register.
Dan was raised in this area only a few miles from here in what they call the Union School area. Mary is originally from Carbondale, but has lived in this area ever since she was 12, which is more years ago than she cares to tell you.
We do have a lot of family members that work here. At one time, we had 4 sisters, 4 nieces, 1 nephew, 1 brother-in-law, 1 cousin, 1 son and 1 daughter, and we feel like the rest of the workers are our family.
Our son, Lee, began working here when he was just a young whippersnapper of 13 years. He's our right-hand man. He does it all...assistant manager, cook, host and anything else that needs done. His wife, Cammie, serves up the food on weekends. They have two children, Jordan and Dylan. Vicki, our best daughter, was put to work before she was even dry behind the ears - right about 9 years old. Now she helps manage, helps hostess and is our #1 server. She married Jason Snider in September of 1996. Jason is an accountant at John A. Logan College and works here on the weekends. They have one daughter, Karlee Alexis.
Since Doc said it's better for all you peoples' hearts, we're proud to say we fry with pure vegetable oil, altho' it was a little hard to talk Grandma into giving up her lard.
The antiques and such you see sittin' or hangin' around here, were mostly given to us by family and friends. Weren't that nice!!
Hope you enjoy the cook's recipes, 'cause that's exactly what they are going to remain - theirs! Sorry.
